Super Quick and Battery Powered

In part 1, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano; a super-quick road car that illustrates the kind of technology that can transfer from Formula-one racing to production vehicles, with a gearbox that shifts in 150 milliseconds and F1-inspired traction control. In part 2, the Chevy Volt concept car is built around the first realization of E-flex with a large battery and a small, 1-liter turbocharged gas engine to produce enough electricity to go up to 640 miles.

Thiese are really nice.  I think they can be used as motivational material with my freshman engineering technology students and I will try that next week in class!

Any chance to increaset the size of the picture?  It would make seeing detail a little easier.  Plus being able to view off-line as has been suggested would be great!

Keep up the good work and keep up variety!

OK, does the 599 shift in 100ms or is it 150ms? I gots to know.

The only bad thing about the electric car is that it can only travel 60 miles before you have to recharge.

But the cool thing is that to charge it you plug it into a normal outlet.

    1)  Neat cars, but we do not drive 100, 120 & 210 MPH!

        Italy car:

    2)  The automatic cuutch is fine.  Citroen had it in the 1950s.  Fords from 1909 to 1927 did not require coordinating both a clutch & a shifter.  Pedals did it all and a person with only one leg could drive a standard Ford safely!  Ford built 15,000,000 of 'em and over half on the road were Fords of that design.  We should modernize that system for 3, 4, & 5 speeds manual or automatic.

    3)  Is the ride as good as the Citroen ID & DS of the 50s and 60s?

         Electric car:

    4)  Good to see the electric system.  Let's design one for symplicity and low cost as follows with reduced loss and complexity from having a seperate generator:

       A) Electric motor-generator propels the vehicle.

       B) Heat engine is coupled to the motor generator by electric clutch and can fully or partially propel the vehicle or charge batteries while moving or stationary.  It can be crank started while moving or stationary through the clutch or hand cranked while stationary if batteries are dead.

      C) The batteries can also be charged from the utility source.

      D) Where can I get one of those one liter engines?  I have the electric car that only needs the engine and clutch to accomplish A), B) & C).
