Hirth has teamed up with Orbital to apply Orbital’s air-assisted direct injection to Hirth’s 2-stroke aircraft engines to meet the global demand for lightweight heavy fuel engines. These engines use lightweight construction and high-performance materials (carbon pistons, high performance alloys, composites etc.) to achieve very high power to weight ratios in a compact engine design with excellent durability. Typical applications for their engines are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) and Auxiliary Power Units (APU’s). Orbital’s air-assisted direct injection system enables spark ignition operation on heavy fuels such as JP5 (NATO-F34), JP8 (NATO-F44), or diesel. This results in a lightweight multi-fuel engine with excellent power to weight, low fuel consumption and low noise emissions.
