Mark Tuffy, Director of Interactive Media at THX, discusses their HD display certification standards. THX display certification is designed to set a single, technology agnostic benchmark for display performance. THX has two primary goals: 1) to drive quality in manufacturing and 2) to help simplify consumer buying decisions. Having a single testing methodology and specification enables display manufacturers to standardize on a benchmark that is recognized by both industry insiders and consumers. Months of research went into developing a specification, covering a wide range of tests and hitting more than 400 data points. Device performance tests are measured according to industry standard guidelines, as specified by VESA, ANSI, and SMPTE. This includes in-depth analysis of display uniformity, luminance and color levels, and resolution. By contrast, the video signal processing tests are defined by THX and include a complete review of each display’s scaling, deinterlacing and overscan capabilities.
