Myers Motors NmG Electric Vehicle

Engineering TV visited Myers Motors and Brad Hirsch at the NAIAS in Detroit to take a look at their affordable lithium-powered personal electric vehicle. The vision of Myers Motors is for every garage to have a sub-$20,000 highway speed electric vehicle. Their current line-up features the Myers Motors NmG (No more Gas) single-passenger electric vehicle (a two-seater is in the works). They claim the NmG's rechargeable 156 volt DC motor enables about 1000 miles of driving for only $20 of electricity (at $0.10 / kWh). Perfect for commutes and small enough to park just about anywhere, it can even reach a 75 mph top speed and is highway legal. For more information, go to: Myers Motors.

They make it sound like they invented this.

No mention of the Corbin Sparrow (which is what this car was before they went bankrupt), yet they use old Sparrow promo material when promoting this thing!  And the Sparrow was $14995, why is this more money?

Also- it is a MOTORCYCLE.  Not a car.  That is how they get around NHTSA crash tests.

I drove a VW bug all thru college and I own a motorcycle, but the thought of driving a vehicle like this at 55 mph scares me.  I can see this car ground looping every time it passes a semi.  (the bug was bad enough, and it had 4 wheels)

Myers Motors did not design this vehicle.  This is the former Corbin Sparrow - should be renamed Phoenix, since it has risen from the ashes of the Corbin Motors bankruptcy debacle.  It was junk when Corbin (the motorcycle seat guy) first conceived of it.  The engineers got fired to save money, a couple of craftsmen continued working, etc. Couldn't sell these, they started on a gas powered 3 wheeler, couldn't make it work, lost or stole all the inverstors' money, done. Myers must have bought the rights and the tooling (either from Corbin, who somehow kept the intellectual property himself/separate from the company, and out of Chapter 7, or from Ron Huch, a former Co. president/investor who sued Corbin) and has contributed the much needed battery upgrade.

Not even if it came with Mac OS X, a bottle of NOx (suuure it's for the engine), insurance paid quarterly, and an Angels Formerly Of Hell membership card would it: pass a semi, deliver rural mail, or sell from stock.  Maybe if it had big dumbo ears with wind turbines that recharged it when it was too windy to drive in 60MPH urban areas...after all, it does not look much prone to theft.

Why all the hate for Myers here?  Yeah, the Corbin Sparrow was the original car.  The NmG is an entirely new car now.  There is one car that is getting close to 100 miles per charge.  This car is fun to drive and believe it or not, very safe.  There are pictures of where a Mercedes hit an NmG and the Mercedes was all beat up but the Myers car was fine.

Why do these "green" alternatives have to be so blasted expensive. I can buy a brand new Nissan Versa (a full blown "real" car for four people) for $11,000. They have got to figure out a way to get these things below the cost of a regular car. I understand the lower cost of ownership, but its that initial cost hurdle that makes it hard to swallow.

The Corbin Sparrow, the NmG, and all the other concept cars they have brainstormed in the past three to four years mean absolutely nothing if you cannot market to the middle class worker. It does need to be affordable, cheaper than the cheap economical four wheeled cars you can buy (Under $10,000.00). If all of those in the "new" world of automobile design (Three wheeled or otherwise) cannot design a low cost, highly effiecient performing car, then I suggest you quit wasting your time and throwing your money away. If we, the people, can't afford to buy it on our current incomes in the market that exists today, you will never get to first base!

    Hey Gary,

The $108,000 stripped Tesla has plenty of buyers, and in my opinion couldn't make it from LA to Palm Springs.

Not even close to being a practical car.

But the George Goonies of the world are snapping them up.
