M/A-COM's Scott Nist tells us about their breakthrough integrated global positioning system (GPS) module, which is an integral part of the award-winning Ford SYNC in-car communications and entertainment system. The GPS module integrates a highly accurate SiRF GPS receiver running the SiRFDRive2 GPS dead reckoning software, a specialized GPS antenna, a microprocessor controller and memory, as well as a CAN bus transceiver and connector and associated software to create a “location server” on the vehicle network that literally location-enables the entire vehicle. Due to the GPS Module’s breakthrough antenna efficiency and receiver sensitivity it can be installed almost anywhere on the vehicle, including hidden mounting locations resulting in major design and system efficiencies.
